Abstracts


This paper examines Nigeria socio-political economy challenges which has
bedevilled it for some time and its effect on colleges of education. Attention is
drawn to the general perception of students patronage to these institution which
is poor as result of societal values on the profession of teaching, negative
political factors as well as a focus on the impact of recession on the Nigeria
economy which have persisted inspite of abundance of human and material
resources. The effect, which is noticed in all sectors of the polity especially
Education is characterized by poor funding which is reflected in the continuous
decay in infrastructural facilities, discontentment of both lecturers and students
inthe system amongst others. Colleges of Education is not an exception in this
regard, as even amongst the tertiary institution in Nigeria, it is
undervalued.Thepaper further examines these issues and suggested measures of
sustainability of colleges of Education through complimentary roles of the
institutions to government efforts through consultancy services to the public,
business ventures, upgrading of school programmes and establishment of
agricultural enterprises amongst others.
